Education Survey Reveals 37% Students In Punjab Districts Cannot Name Country’s Capital

The survey found that 37 percent of students from Amritsar and Bathinda can’t name the country’s capital.

Educationists stated the survey demonstrated that college education failed at the job of teaching writing, reading and arithmetic.

They stated there’s need to minimise the interference in the schooling system to bring change and to attract quality teachers.

ASER 2017 was completed across India at a total of 28 districts of 24 countries and at Amritsar and Bathinda districts, the poll was conducted in Punjab. The size of this sample was 2155 students from 1857 families in 119 villages around both districts.

For the first-time ASER 2017 concentrated on 14 to 18 years old students, along with the topic of the poll was “beyond fundamental”, to learn their overall understanding. Pratham is doing since 2005-2006 the polls.

According to the poll, there was 83.6 percent enrolment of students in Class 12 as well as Class 9 — 86 percent enrolment at Amritsar and 81.6 percent in Bathinda.

Total 27 percent — 34 percent in Amritsar and 21 percent in Bathinda — couldn’t subtract; 21 percent couldn’t read an English sentence — at Amritsar 25 percent and 17.5 percent in Bathinda.

Approximately 37 percent couldn’t inform 44 percent, the capital in Amritsar and 31 percent. And 50 percent in Amritsar and 33 percent in Bathinda know or couldn’t read three from four directions.

At Amritsar district, 15 percent were not able to read Class 2 text within their speech, and 36 percent students couldn’t tell time (hour and minutes). Time could not be calculated by nearly 63 percent and 95 percent students had no training. Banking was known about by around 6 percent. Approximately 35 percent Web had never been used by students and 38 percent hadn’t used a computer.

21 percent students couldn’t reevaluate the map of the nation and 30 percent couldn’t name their nation and their nation could not be recognised by 68 percent.

In Bathinda district, that the time could not be told by approximately 32 percent and time could not be calculated by 59 percent. According to the poll, 56 percent and almost 9 percent couldn’t recognize the state’s map and the map of India, respectively and 15 percent couldn’t tell their state’s title.

Women fared much better in basic reading and arithmetic compared to boys but were more demanding in “beyond fundamental” knowledge.

ASER strove to look ‘beyond fundamentals’ as four domain names were considered-activity, skill, awareness and ambitions and research a group of domains, Singh stated.
